Mental Health First Aid

Accredited Mental Health First Aid courses are offered by Student Life and Learning to USC Students at a number of times in the year.

What is MHFA?

Mental health first aid is the help provided to a person who is developing a mental health problem, or who is in a mental health crisis, until appropriate professional treatment is received or the crisis resolves. Mental health first aid strategies are taught in evidence-based training programs and conducted by MHFA Instructors.

MHFA Training can provide members of the community with:

  • skills in how to recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health problems;
  • knowledge of the possible causes or risk factors for these mental health problems;
  • awareness of the evidenced based medical, psychological and alternative treatments available;
  • skills in how to give appropriate initial help and support someone experiencing a mental health problem;
  • skills in how to take appropriate action if a crisis situation arises involving suicidal behaviour, panic attack, stress reaction to trauma, overdose or threatening psychotic behaviour.

The next 12hr course is scheduled for

January 14 & 15
or
January 21 & 22
or
January 28 & 29

present5 Mindfulness

present5 at USC takes the everyday practice of taking a 5 minute break to relax and recharge - and applying a practice that research suggests reduces symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression, while increasing attention, positive emotion and well-being. The mindfulness drop in sessions move away from formal practice to introduce techniques you can use anywhere, any time. Techniques shared range from a body scan to mindful walking and eating.
